Location

National September 11 Memorial & Museum, New York, NY, United States of America
(Framed in 2017)

Medium

Charcoal on paper

Size

64.75 in x 183 in (464.8 cm x 154.3 cm)

Glazing

Optium Museum Acrylic®

The Challenge

  • Large art work makes use of glass prohibitively heavy.
  • Loosely bound charcoal media requires anti-static glazing, so charcoal doesn’t detach from paper surface and stick to glazing.
  • Displayed in high traffic area near the museum’s coat check station and susceptible to abrasions.
  • Dimensions of work exceed maximum sheet size of anti-static acrylic glazing available.

The Solution

Seamed Optium Museum Acrylic®

Shatter resistant
Safeguards against injury and damage to artwork and visitors.  This product is ideal for valuable works, high traffic areas, and public event spaces.

Lightweight
Acrylic is half the weight of glass; Ideal for large, heavy projects.

Anti-static protection exceeds that of glass
Immediately eliminates static charge.  Makes for safer, easier framing and less cleaning.

Abrasion resistant

A durable hard coat protects against scratches from cleaning and general exposure to the public.

Anti-reflective

Allows viewers to see the drawing rather than their own reflections.

99% UV blocking
Protects the tapestry from the most damaging light wavelengths, helping prevent fading and fiber breakdown.

Seamed Optium Museum Acrylic
SmallCorp seamed two sheets of Optium Museum Acrylic together.  Allows for the large art work to be glazed with anti-reflective and anti-static protection.

The Work

New York Metamorphosis, a large-scale charcoal drawing on paper created by Norwegian-born artist Torild Stray, was acquired by the 9/11 Memorial Museum in 2017 and is exhibited under Optium Museum Acrylic. Stray created the 60 in x 168 in (152.4 cm x 427 cm) panoramic drawing of New York City while an artist-in-residence at the famed World Trade Center artists’ residency program, World Views.
