The saying “April showers bring May flowers” is a common saying during this time of year. Let us show you how to add some spring curb appeal to your store. Below you will find steps by step instructions on how to make a chevron decorated flower pot. Planter boxes are a great way to spruce up your storefront. This custom framing focused planter box not only gives your shop a nice visual appearance, but it allows you to subtly showcase your merchandise in a fun way.
1. Buy or make a planter box
We started with a plain redwood planter from Home Depot. This one is 22 inches, an ideal size for working with our leftover moulding.
2. Paint a base color on the box
The redwood is attractive, but painting the box ensured a consistent base color and allowed us to work in one of the colors of the new Fourth Corner Frames palette, espresso. Both sprays and brushes will do the job, but make sure it is an exterior paint that works on wood surfaces.
3. Select your mouldings
Pull out your old moulding pieces and select some for the sides of the planter. We used about six to eight per side, but this will vary based on the size of your planter and the thicknesses of the mouldings themselves. Keep it interesting by varying the design with different textures, widths and colors. You can paint the old mouldings or use the original colors. For the planter at Fourth Corner Frames, we used gold moulding throughout for the accent, as gold was also part of the store’s new color palette.
4. Cut the moulding
Cut the mouldings to install as chevrons. For a custom framer, it almost goes without saying, but make sure you measure your sides to ensure the correct fit. (Now you can see why this project makes for a helpful training tool.)
5. Install the chevrons
Use an adhesive to adhere the pieces to the dry painted flower box. We used Liquid Nails, which was very effective but required a caulk gun.
6. Plant some flowers
When choosing flowers, keep in mind how much sun or shade the placement of your planter offers, and choose plants that are hardy and easy to maintain. Mix greenery in with blooms to give it a sense of balance, since blooms only last so long. Mulch over the exposed dirt for a tidy appearance and to help the soil retain moisture.
