She may be new to the Tru Vue® Framing Competition with her first entry this year, but Vivien Smith has more than 30 years of experience behind the designs that she creates at her shop, VJS Studio in East Hampton, NY.
Part of one of the country’s decades-long thriving art communities, Vivien has seen many changes in the industry and watched trends evolve as different generations of artists, art-lovers, and homeowners have sought out her expertise to frame their treasured pieces. One thing that has remained consistent is her approach to design.
“My philosophy is to choose a design and materials that don’t overpower the art or item I’ve been asked to frame,” said Vivien. “I’ve seen my market grow from primarily artists and galleries to interior designers and homeowners, but the way of framing has remained the same.”
Though she is thrilled to be a competition finalist, she has already seen the benefits of entering the competition by being able to take an idea and go beyond what is typically expected. The creative process was fun for her team and has given them fresh ideas for other framing projects.
